The best foamy and HEALTHY homemade hot chocolate!
Hey everyone! Today I wanted to share the ritual that makes every morning especially enjoyable for me. And of course it has to do with chocolate! How couldn’t it, right? Every morning I wake up and make the best super simple, healthy, and even foamy homemade hot chocolate. It’s paleo and completely from scratch!
The ingredients
This hot chocolate needs only four ingredients, and there’s no mixing in a pot required!
Ingredients
- Cacao powder (cocoa should work too)
- Canned coconut milk/cream (only ingredients should be coconut and water)
- Honey
- Salt
The ingredients are pretty basic. Ideally, for the healthiest version of this recipe, you’d use organic raw cacao and a high quality of honey. Of course, always read labels to make sure there are no unnecessary ingredients.
Coconut milk can be especially hard to find without gums and stabilizers (they’re not great for us). This is why I periodically stock up and buy eight cans of coconut cream from the Trader Joe’s in my area. The only ingredients in their coconut milk and cream are coconut and water! This recipe might work fine if the coconut milk does have these other ingredients, but I haven’t tried so you’ll have to experiment for yourself.
The following coconut milk brands do not have any additives:
- Trader Joe’s coconut cream/milk (I’d suggest cream for this recipe)
- Aroy-D
- Native Forest, unsweetened simple
If you know any other brands, please comment down below!! And whatever you get, make sure it’s thick and creamy for the best results.
The SUPER easy process
Now get ready for the easiest hot chocolate ever! Add 1-2 spoonfuls of cacao powder to your favorite mug, depending on how intense you want the chocolate flavor to be. Then add the coconut milk/cream. I add in about 5-6 spoonfuls, but you can do more. Then add honey to taste. You can always add more honey at the end if your hot chocolate doesn’t taste sweet enough. Lastly, add a pinch of salt.
Now, the most important part of the process – at least if you want your hot chocolate to foam – is to mix all of the ingredients with your spoon before adding the water. If you added enough coconut milk/cream, it should turn into a thick syrupy concoction at the bottom of your mug. If it is too dry, add more coconut milk/cream.
Then pour boiled water from your kettle over the syrupy concoction, filling your mug. You should see the foam once it’s totally full! Follow up by stirring gently to mix it all together. You should end up with something like this!
Ah, so yummy, and I never get tired of it!
It’s best to leave the spoon in and stir periodically while drinking the hot chocolate. This is because the cacao doesn’t totally dissolve in the water and will accumulate at the bottom otherwise.
